Thetrain,onleavingSacramento,andpassingthejunction,Roclin,Auburn,andColfax,enteredtherangeoftheSierraNevada.‘Ciscowasreachedatseveninthemorning;andanhourlaterthedormitorywastransformedintoanordinarycar,andthetravellerscouldobservethepicturesquebeautiesofthemountainregionthroughwhichtheyweresteaming.Therailwaytrackwoundinandoutamongthepasses,nowapproachingthemountain-sides,nowsuspendedoverprecipices,avoidingabruptanglesbyboldcurves,plungingintonarrowdefiles,whichseemedtohavenooutlet.Thelocomotive,itsgreatfunnelemittingaweirdlight,withitssharpbell,anditscow-catcherextendedlikeaspur,mingleditsshrieksandbellowingswiththenoiseoftorrentsandcascades,andtwineditssmokeamongthebranchesofthegiganticpines.
Therewerefewornobridgesortunnelsontheroute.Therailwayturnedaroundthesidesofthemountains,anddidnotattempttoviolatenaturebytakingtheshortestcutfromonepointtoanother.
ThetrainenteredtheStateofNevadathroughtheCarsonValleyaboutnineo’clock,goingalwaysnortheasterly;andatmiddayreachedReno,wheretherewasadelayoftwentyminutesforbreakfast.
Fromthispointtheroad,runningalongHumboldtRiver,passednorthwardforseveralmilesbyitsbanks;thenitturnedeastward,andkeptbytheriveruntilitreachedtheHumboldtRange,nearlyattheextremeeasternlimitofNevada.
Havingbreakfasted,Mr.Foggandhiscompanionsresumedtheirplacesinthecar,andobservedthevariedlandscapewhichunfoldeditselfastheypassedalongthevastprairies,themountainsliningthehorizon,andthecreeks,withtheirfrothy,foamingstreams.
