Theweatherwasbadduringthelatterdaysofthevoyage.Thewind,obstinatelyremaininginthenorth-west,blewagale,andretardedthesteamer.TheRangoonrolledheavilyandthepassengersbecameimpatientofthelong,monstrouswaveswhichthewindraisedbeforetheirpath.Asortoftempestaroseonthe3rdofNovember,thesquallknockingthevesselaboutwithfury,andthewavesrunninghigh.TheRangoonreefedallhersails,andeventheriggingprovedtoomuch,whistlingandshakingamidthesquall.Thesteamerwasforcedtoproceedslowly,andthecaptainestimatedthatshewouldreachHongKongtwentyhoursbehindtime,andmoreifthestormlasted.
PhileasFogggazedatthetempestuoussea,whichseemedtobestrugglingespeciallytodelayhim,withhishabitualtranquillity.Heneverchangedcountenanceforaninstant,thoughadelayoftwentyhours,bymakinghimtoolatefortheYokohamaboat,wouldalmostinevitablycausethelossofthewager.Butthismanofnervemanifestedneitherimpatiencenorannoyance;itseemedasifthestormwereapartofhisprogramme,andhadbeenforeseen.Aoudawasamazedtofindhimascalmashehadbeenfromthefirsttimeshesawhim.
Fixdidnotlookatthestateofthingsinthesamelight.Thestormgreatlypleasedhim.HissatisfactionwouldhavebeencompletehadtheRangoonbeenforcedtoretreatbeforetheviolenceofwindandwaves.Eachdelayfilledhimwithhope,foritbecamemoreandmoreprobablethatFoggwouldbeobligedtoremainsomedaysatHongKong;andnowtheheavensthemselvesbecamehisallies,withthegustsandsqualls.Itmatterednotthattheymadehimsea-sick—hemadenoaccountofthisinconvenience;and,whilsthisbodywaswrithingundertheireffects,hisspiritboundedwithhopefulexultation.
