TheParsee,whowasquitefamiliarwiththeroadsandpathsinthedistrict,declaredthattheywouldgaintwentymilesbystrikingdirectlythroughtheforest.
PhileasFoggandSirFrancisCromarty,plungedtotheneckinthepeculiarhowdahsprovidedforthem,werehorriblyjostledbytheswifttrottingoftheelephant,spurredonashewasbytheskilfulParsee;buttheyenduredthediscomfortwithtrueBritishphlegm,talkinglittle,andscarcelyabletocatchaglimpseofeachother. AsforPassepartout,whowasmountedonthebeast’sback,andreceivedthedirectforceofeachconcussionashetrodalong,hewasverycareful,inaccordancewithhismaster’sadvice,tokeephistonguefrombetweenhisteeth,asitwouldotherwisehavebeenbittenoffshort.
