TheEnglishhavenotbeenabletosecurecompletedominionoverthisterritory,whichissubjectedtotheinfluenceofrajahs,whomitisalmostimpossibletoreachintheirinaccessiblemountainfastnesses. ThetravellersseveraltimessawbandsofferociousIndians,who,whentheyperceivedtheelephantstridingacross-country,madeangryaridthreateningmotions. TheParseeavoidedthemasmuchaspossible. Fewanimalswereobservedontheroute;eventhemonkeyshurriedfromtheirpathwithcontortionsandgrimaceswhichconvulsedPassepartoutwithlaughter.
Inthemidstofhisgaiety,however,onethoughttroubledtheworthyservant.
