           Thetrain,onleavingGreatSaltLakeatOgden,passednorthwardforanhourasfarasWeberRiver,havingcompletednearlyninehundredmilesfromSanFrancisco.FromthispointittookaneasterlydirectiontowardsthejaggedWahsatchMountains.ItwasinthesectionincludedbetweenthisrangeandtheRockyMountainsthattheAmericanengineersfoundthemostformidabledifficultiesinlayingtheroad,andthatthegovernmentgrantedasubsidyofforty-eightthousanddollarspermile,insteadofsixteenthousandallowedfortheworkdoneontheplains.Buttheengineers,insteadofviolatingnature,avoideditsdifficultiesbywindingaround,insteadofpenetratingtherocks.Onetunnelonly,fourteenthousandfeetinlength,waspiercedinordertoarriveatthegreatbasin.

           ThetrackuptothistimehadreacheditshighestelevationattheGreatSaltLake.Fromthispointitdescribedalongcurve,descendingtowardsBitterCreekValley,toriseagaintothedividingridgeofthewatersbetweentheAtlanticandthePacific.Thereweremanycreeksinthismountainousregion,anditwasnecessarytocrossMuddyCreek,GreenCreek,andothers,uponculverts.

           Passepartoutgrewmoreandmoreimpatientastheywenton,whileFixlongedtogetoutofthisdifficultregion,andwasmoreanxiousthanPhileasFogghimselftobebeyondthedangerofdelaysandaccidents,andsetfootonEnglishsoil.

           Atteno’clockatnightthetrainstoppedatFortBridgerstation,andtwentyminuteslaterenteredWyomingTerritory,followingthevalleyofBitterCreekthroughout.Thenextday,7thDecember,theystoppedforaquarterofanhouratGreenRiverstation.Snowhadfallenabundantlyduringthenight,but,beingmixedwithrain,ithadhalfmelted,anddidnotinterrupttheirprogress.
