           Therewasbutlittleconversationinthecar,andsoonmanyofthepassengerswereovercomewithsleep.Passepartoutfoundhimselfbesidethedetective;buthedidnottalktohim.Afterrecentevents,theirrelationswitheachotherhadgrownsomewhatcold;therecouldnolongerbemutualsympathyorintimacybetweenthem.Fix’smannerhadnotchanged;butPassepartoutwasveryreserved,andreadytostranglehisformerfriendontheslightestprovocation.

           Snowbegantofallanhouraftertheystarted,afinesnow,however,whichhappilycouldnotobstructthetrain;nothingcouldbeseenfromthewindowsbutavast,whitesheet,againstwhichthesmokeofthelocomotivehadagreyishaspect.

           Ateighto’clockastewardenteredthecarandannouncedthatthetimeforgoingtobedhadarrived;andinafewminutesthecarwastransformedintoadormitory.Thebacksoftheseatswerethrownback,bedsteadscarefullypackedwererolledoutbyaningenioussystem,berthsweresuddenlyimprovised,andeachtravellerhadsoonathisdispositionacomfortablebed,protectedfromcuriouseyesbythickcurtains.Thesheetswerecleanandthepillowssoft.ItonlyremainedtogotobedandsleepwhicheverybodydidwhilethetrainspedonacrosstheStateofCalifornia.

           ThecountrybetweenSanFranciscoandSacramentoisnotveryhilly.TheCentralPacific,takingSacramentoforitsstarting-point,extendseastwardtomeettheroadfromOmaha.ThelinefromSanFranciscotoSacramentorunsinanorth-easterlydirection,alongtheAmericanRiver,whichemptiesintoSanPabloBay.Theonehundredandtwentymilesbetweenthesecitieswereaccomplishedinsixhours,andtowardsmidnight,whilefastasleep,thetravellerspassedthroughSacramento;sothattheysawnothingofthatimportantplace,theseatoftheStategovernment,withitsfinequays,itsbroadstreets,itsnoblehotels,squares,andchurches.
