           Onthereturnofthatladytotea,shehadtouchedherselfupwithalittlepowderandpomatum,andwasnotwithoutmoralenchantmentlikewise:thelattershowingitselfinmuchsweetpatronageofmannertowardsMissDorrit,andinanairofastenderinterestinMrDorritaswasconsistentwithrigidpropriety.Atthecloseoftheevening,whensherosetoretire,MrDorrittookherbythehandasifheweregoingtoleadheroutintothePiazzaofthepeopletowalkaminuetbymoonlight,andwithgreatsolemnityconductedhertotheroomdoor,whereheraisedherknucklestohislips.Havingpartedfromherwithwhatmaybeconjecturedtohavebeenaratherbonykissofacosmeticflavour,hegavehisdaughterhisblessing,graciously.Andhavingthushintedthattherewassomethingremarkableinthewind,heagainwenttobed.

           Heremainedintheseclusionofhisownchambernextmorning;but,earlyintheafternoon,sentdownhisbestcomplimentstoMrsGeneral,byMrTinkler,andbeggedshewouldaccompanyMissDorritonanairingwithouthim.HisdaughterwasdressedforMrsMerdle’sdinnerbeforeheappeared.Hethenpresentedhimselfinarefulgentconditionastohisattire,butlookingindefinablyshrunkenandold.However,ashewasplainlydeterminedtobeangrywithherifshesomuchasaskedhimhowhewas,sheonlyventuredtokisshischeek,beforeaccompanyinghimtoMrsMerdle’swithananxiousheart.

           Thedistancethattheyhadtogowasveryshort,buthewasathisbuildingworkagainbeforethecarriagehadhalftraversedit.
