           ‘MrDorritwillpardonme,’saidMrsGeneral,‘ifIremarkthatthisisnotatimeorplaceforthepursuitofthepresentconversation.MrDorritwillexcusemeifIremindhimthatMissDorritisintheadjoiningroom,andisvisibletomyselfwhileIutterhername.MrDorritwillforgivemeifIobservethatIamagitated,andthatIfindtherearemomentswhenweaknessesIsupposedmyselftohavesubdued,returnwithredoubledpower.MrDorritwillallowmetowithdraw.’

           ‘Hum.Perhapswemayresumethis—ha—interestingconversation,’saidMrDorrit,‘atanothertime;unlessitshouldbe,whatIhopeitisnot—hum—inanywaydisagreeableto—ah—MrsGeneral.’

           MrsGeneralthentookherselfoffinastatelyway,andnotwiththatamountoftrepidationuponherwhichmighthavebeenexpectedinalessremarkablewoman.MrDorrit,whohadconductedhispartofthedialoguewithacertainmajesticandadmiringcondescension—muchassomepeoplemaybeseentoconductthemselvesinChurch,andtoperformtheirpartintheservice—appeared,onthewhole,verywellsatisfiedwithhimselfandwithMrsGeneraltoo.
