           Blinds,shutters,curtains,awnings,wereallclosedanddrawntokeepoutthestare.Grantitbutachinkorkeyhole,anditshotinlikeawhite-hotarrow.Thechurcheswerethefreestfromit.Tocomeoutofthetwilightofpillarsandarches—dreamilydottedwithwinkinglamps,dreamilypeopledwithuglyoldshadowspiouslydozing,spitting,andbegging—wastoplungeintoafieryriver,andswimforlifetotheneareststripofshade.
