           IHAVEnowcometothemostdifficultpartofmystory.Andwhy?BecauseIdonotknowenoughaboutit.AndwhyshouldInotknowasmuchaboutthispartasaboutanyotherpart?ForofcourseIcouldknownothingaboutthestoryexceptDiamondhadtoldit;andwhyshouldnotDiamondtellaboutthecountryatthebackofthenorthwind,aswellasabouthisadventuresingettingthere?Because,whenhecameback,hehadforgottenagreatdeal,andwhathedidrememberwasveryhardtotell.Thingstherearesodifferentfromthingshere!Thepeopletheredonotspeakthesamelanguageforonething.Indeed,Diamondinsistedthattheretheydonotspeakatall.Idonotthinkhewasright,butitmaywellhaveappearedsotoDiamond.Thefactis,wehavedifferentreportsoftheplacefromthemosttrustworthypeople.Thereforeweareboundtobelievethatitappearssomewhatdifferenttodifferentpeople.All,however,agreeinageneralwayaboutit.

           Iwilltellyousomethingofwhattwoverydifferentpeoplehavereported,bothofwhomknewmoreaboutit,Ibelieve,thanHerodotus.Oneofthemspeaksfromhisownexperience,forhevisitedthecountry;theotherfromthetestimonyofayoungpeasantgirlwhocamebackfromitforamonth’svisittoherfriends.TheformerwasagreatItalianofnoblefamily,whodiedmorethanfivehundredyearsago;thelatteraScotchshepherdwhodiednotfortyyearsago.

           TheItalian,then,informsusthathehadtoenterthatcountrythroughafiresohotthathewouldhavethrownhimselfintoboilingglasstocoolhimself.
