           ITWASagreatdelighttoDiamondwhenatlengthNannywaswellenoughtoleavethehospitalandgohometotheirhouse.Shewasnotverystrongyet,butDiamond’smotherwasveryconsiderateofher,andtookcarethatsheshouldhavenothingtodoshewasnotquitefitfor.IfNannyhadbeentakenstraightfromthestreet,itisveryprobableshewouldnothavebeensopleasantinadecenthousehold,orsoeasytoteach;butaftertherefininginfluencesofherillnessandthekindtreatmentshehadhadinthehospital,shemovedaboutthehousejustlikesomerathersadpleasurehauntingthemind.Asshegotbetter,andthecolourcamebacktohercheeks,herstepgrewlighterandquicker,hersmileshoneoutmorereadily,anditbecamecertainthatshewouldsoonbeatreasureofhelp.ItwasgreatfuntoseeDiamondteachingherhowtoholdthebaby,andwashanddresshim,andoftentheylaughedtogetheroverherawkwardness.ButshehadnotmanysuchlessonsbeforeshewasabletoperformthosedutiesquiteaswellasDiamondhimself.

           ThingshoweverdidnotgowellwithJosephfromtheveryarrivalofRuby.Italmostseemedasiftheredbeasthadbroughtillluckwithhim.Thefareswerefewer,andthepayless.Ruby’sservicesdidindeedmaketheweek’sincomeatfirstalittlebeyondwhatitusedtobe,butthenthereweretwomoretofeed.Afterthefirstmonthhefelllame,andforthewholeofthenextJosephdarednotattempttoworkhim.Icannotsaythathenevergrumbled,forhisownhealthwasfarfromwhatithadbeen;butIcansaythathetriedtodohisbest.
