Chapter XV. The Mews

           

           ITWASlateintheafternoonwhenDiamondandhismotherandthebabyreachedLondon.IwassofullofDiamondthatIforgottotellyouababyhadarrivedinthemeantime.Hisfatherwaswaitingforthemwithhisowncab,buttheyhadnottoldDiamondwhothehorsewas;forhisfatherwantedtoenjoythepleasureofhissurprisewhenhefounditout.Hegotinwithhismotherwithoutlookingatthehorse,andhisfatherhavingputupDiamond’scarpet-bagandhismother’slittletrunk,gotupontheboxhimselfanddroveoff;andDiamondwasquiteproudofridinghomeinhisfather’sowncarriage.Butwhenhegottothemews,hecouldnothelpbeingalittledismayedatfirst;andifhehadneverbeentothebackofthenorthwind,Iamafraidhewouldhavecriedalittle.Butinsteadofthat,hesaidtohimselfitwasafinethingalltheoldfurniturewasthere.Andinsteadofhelpinghismothertobemiserableatthechange,hebegantofindoutalltheadvantagesoftheplace;foreveryplacehassomeadvantages,andtheyarealwaysbetterworthknowingthanthedisadvantages.Certainlytheweatherwasdepressing,forathick,dull,persistentrainwasfallingbythetimetheyreachedhome.Buthappilytheweatherisverychangeable;andbesides,therewasagoodfireburningintheroom,whichtheirneighbourwiththedrunkenhusbandhadattendedtoforthem;andthetea-thingswereputout,andthekettlewasboilingonthefire.Andwithagoodfire,andteaandbreadandbutter,thingscannotbesaidtobemiserable.
