           Thestrainingofthemasts,thecreakingoftheboom,thesingingoftheropes,thebangingoftheblocksastheyputthevesselabout,allfellinwiththeroaringofthewindabove,thesurgeofthewavespasthersides,andthethudwithwhicheverynowandthenonewouldstrikeher;whilethroughitallDiamondcouldhearthegurgling,rippling,talkingflowofthewateragainstherplanks,assheslippedthroughit,lyingnowonthisside,nowonthat—likeasubduedairrunningthroughthegrandmusichisNorthWindwasmakingabouthimtokeephimfromtiringastheyspedontowardsthecountryatthebackofherdoorstep.

           HowlongthislastedDiamondhadnoidea.Heseemedtofallasleepsometimes,onlythroughthesleepheheardthesoundsgoingon.Atlengththeweatherseemedtogetworse.Theconfusionandtramplingoffeetgrewmorefrequentoverhishead;thevessellayovermoreandmoreonherside,andwentroaringthroughthewaves,whichbangedandthumpedatherasifinanger.Allatoncearoseaterribleuproar.Thehatchwasblownoff;acoldfiercewindsweptinuponhim;andalongarmcamewithitwhichlaidholdofhimandliftedhimout.Thesamemomenthesawthelittlevesselfarbelowhimrightingherself.Shehadtakeninallhersailsandlaynowtossingonthewaveslikeasea-birdwithfoldedwings.Ashortdistancetothesouthlayamuchlargervessel,withtwoorthreesailsset,andtowardsitNorthWindwascarryingDiamond.ItwasaGermanship,onitswaytotheNorthPole.
