Thentherecameablastofwind,andtherainfollowedinstraight-pouringlines,asifoutofawatering-pot.DiamondjumpedupwithhislittleDulcimerinhisarms,andNannycaughtupthelittleboy,andtheyranforthecottage.Jimvanishedwithadoubleshuffle,andIwentintothehouse.
WhenIcameoutagaintoreturnhome,thecloudsweregone,andtheeveningskyglimmeredthroughthetrees,blue,andpale-greentowardsthewest,Iturnedmystepsalittleasidetolookatthestrickenbeech.Isawtheboughtornfromthestem,andthatwasallthetwilightwouldallowmetosee.WhileIstoodgazing,downfromtheskycameasoundofsinging,butthevoicewasneitheroflarknorofnightingale:itwassweeterthaneither:itwasthevoiceofDiamond,upinhisairynest:—
Thelightningandthunder,
Theygoandtheycome;
Butthestarsandthestillness
