ItwasverysoonafterthisthatIcametoknowDiamond.IwasthenatutorinafamilywhoseestateadjoinedthelittlepropertybelongingtoTheMound.IhadmadetheacquaintanceofMr.RaymondinLondonsometimebefore,andwaswalkingupthedrivetowardsthehousetocalluponhimonefinewarmevening,whenIsawDiamondforthefirsttime.Hewassittingatthefootofagreatbeech-tree,afewyardsfromtheroad,withabookonhisknees.Hedidnotseeme.Iwalkedupbehindthetree,andpeepingoverhisshoulder,sawthathewasreadingafairy-book.
“Whatareyoureading?”Isaid,andspokesuddenly,withthehopeofseeingastartledlittlefacelookroundatme.Diamondturnedhisheadasquietlyasifhewereonlyobeyinghismother’svoice,andthecalmnessofhisfacerebukedmyunkinddesireandmademeashamedofit.
“IamreadingthestoryoftheLittleLadyandtheGoblinPrince,”saidDiamond.
“IamsorryIdon’tknowthestory,”Ireturned.“Whoisitby?”
“Mr.Raymondmadeit.”
“Isheyouruncle?”Iaskedataguess.
“No.He’smymaster.”
“Whatdoyoudoforhim?”Iaskedrespectfully.
“Anythinghewishesmetodo,”heanswered.“Iambusyforhimnow.Hegavemethisstorytoread.Hewantsmyopinionuponit.”
