           Hislittleheartwasinaflutter,forhehadlonggivenupallthoughtofseeingheragain.Neithernowwashetoseeher.Whenhegotout,agreatpuffofwindcameagainsthim,andinobediencetoitheturnedhisback,andwentasitblew.Itblewhimrightuptothestable-door,andwentonblowing.

           “Shewantsmetogointothestable,”saidDiamondtohimself,“butthedoorislocked.”

           Heknewwherethekeywas,inacertainholeinthewall—fartoohighforhimtogetat.Herantotheplace,however:justashereachedittherecameawildblast,anddownfellthekeyclangingonthestonesathisfeet.Hepickeditup,andranbackandopenedthestable-door,andwentin.Andwhatdoyouthinkhesaw?

           Alittlelightcamethroughthedustywindowfromagas-lamp,sufficienttoshowhimDiamondandRubywiththeirtwoheadsup,lookingateachotheracrossthepartitionoftheirstalls.ThelightshowedthewhitemarkonDiamond’sforehead,butRuby’seyeshonesobright,thathethoughtmorelightcameoutofitthanwentin.Thisiswhathesaw.

           Butwhatdoyouthinkheheard?

           Heheardthetwohorsestalkingtoeachother—inastrangelanguage,whichyet,somehoworother,hecouldunderstand,andturnoverinhismindinEnglish.ThefirstwordsheheardwerefromDiamond,whoapparentlyhadbeenalreadyquarrellingwithRuby.

           “LookhowfatyouareRuby!”saidoldDiamond.“Youaresoplumpandyourskinshinesso,yououghttobeashamedofyourself.”

           “There’snoharminbeingfat,”saidRubyinadeprecatingtone.“No,norinbeingsleek.Imayaswellshineasnot.
