           Shecarriedhiminherarmsuptoherroom;but,afraidoffrighteninghimathisownsleep-walking,asshesupposedit,saidnothingaboutlastnight.Beforethenextdaywasover,Diamondhadalmostconcludedthewholeadventureadream.

           Foraweekhismotherwatchedhimverycarefully—goingintotheloftseveraltimesanight—asoften,infact,asshewoke.Everytimeshefoundhimfastasleep.

           Allthatweekitwashardweather.Thegrassshowedwhiteinthemorningwiththehoar-frostwhichclungliketinycomfitstoeveryblade.AndasDiamond’sshoeswerenotgood,andhismotherhadnotquitesavedupenoughmoneytogethimthenewpairshesomuchwantedforhim,shewouldnotlethimrunout.Heplayedallhisgamesoverandoverindoors,especiallythatofdrivingtwochairsharnessedtothebaby’scradle;andiftheydidnotgoveryfast,theywentasfastascouldbeexpectedofthebestchairsintheworld,althoughoneofthemhadonlythreelegs,andtheotheronlyhalfaback.

           Atlengthhismotherbroughthomehisnewshoes,andnosoonerdidshefindtheyfittedhimthanshetoldhimhemightrunoutintheyardandamusehimselfforanhour.

           Thesunwasgoingdownwhenheflewfromthedoorlikeabirdfromitscage.Alltheworldwasnewtohim.Agreatfireofsunsetburnedonthetopofthegatethatledfromthestablestothehouse;abovethefireintheskylayalargelakeofgreenlight,abovethatagoldencloud,andoverthattheblueofthewintryheavens.AndDiamondthoughtthat,nexttohisownhome,hehadneverseenanyplacehewouldlikesomuchtoliveinasthatsky.
