           Itwaslongpastmidnightwhenhereachedit,but,tohissurprise,theoldwomanwasparingpotatoesatthedoor.Fairiesarefondofdoingoddthings.Indeed,howevertheymaydissemble,thenightisalwaystheirday.Andsoitiswithallwhohavefairybloodinthem.

           “Why,whatareyoudoingthere,thistimeofthenight,mother?”saidtheprince;forthatwasthekindwayinwhichanyyoungmaninhiscountrywouldaddressawomanwhowasmucholderthanhimself.

           “Gettingyoursupperready,myson,”sheanswered.

           “Oh,Idon’twantanysupper,”saidtheprince.

           “Ah!you’veseenDaylight,”saidshe.

           “I’veseenaprincesswhoneversawit,”saidtheprince.

           “Doyoulikeher?”askedthefairy.

           “Oh!don’tI?”saidtheprince.“Morethanyouwouldbelieve,mother.”

           “Afairycanbelieveanythingthateverwasorevercouldbe,”saidtheoldwoman.

           “Thenareyouafairy?”askedtheprince.

           “Yes,”saidshe.

           “Thenwhatdoyoudoforthingsnottobelieve?”askedtheprince.

           “There’splentyofthem—everythingthatneverwasnorevercouldbe.”

           “Plenty,Igrantyou,”saidtheprince.
