Hecouldnotleavetheplace.Whatifsheshouldcomethenextnight!Hewouldgladlyendureaday’shungertoseeheryetagain:hewouldbucklehisbeltquitetight.Hewalkedroundthegladetoseeifhecoulddiscoveranyprintsofherfeet.Butthegrasswassoshort,andherstepshadbeensolight,thatshehadnotleftasingletracebehindher.Hewalkedhalf-wayroundthewoodwithoutseeinganythingtoaccountforherpresence.Thenhespiedalovelylittlehouse,withthatchedroofandloweaves,surroundedbyanexquisitegarden,withdovesandpeacockswalkinginit.Ofcoursethismustbewherethegraciousladywholovedthemoonlightlived.Forgettinghisappearance,hewalkedtowardsthedoor,determinedtomakeinquiries,butashepassedalittlepondfullofgoldandsilverfishes,hecaughtsightofhimselfandturnedtofindthedoortothekitchen.Thereheknocked,andaskedforapieceofbread.Thegood-naturedcookbroughthimin,andgavehimanexcellentbreakfast,whichtheprincefoundnothingtheworseforbeingservedinthekitchen.Whileheate,hetalkedwithhisentertainer,andlearnedthatthiswasthefavouriteretreatofthePrincessDaylight.
