AndDiamondcouldnothelpthinkingofwordswhichhehadheardinthechurchthedaybefore:“Surelyitisgoodtobeafflicted;”orsomethinglikethat.NorthWind,somehoworother,musthavehadtodowithher!Shehadgrownfromaroughgirlintoagentlemaiden.
Mr.Raymond,however,wasnotsurprised,forhewasusedtoseesuchlovelychanges—somethinglikethechangewhichpassesuponthecrawling,many-footedcreature,whenitturnssickandill,andrevivesabutterfly,withtwowingsinsteadofmanyfeet.Insteadofherhavingtotakecareofherself,kindhandsministeredtoher,makinghercomfortableandsweetandclean,soothingherachinghead,andgivinghercoolingdrinkwhenshewasthirsty;andkindeyes,thestarsofthekingdomofheaven,hadshoneuponher;sothat,whatwiththefireofthefeverandthedewoftenderness,thatwhichwascoarseinherhadmeltedaway,andherwholefacehadgrownsorefinedandsweetthatDiamonddidnotknowher.Butashegazed,thebestoftheoldface,allthetrueandgoodpartofit,thatwhichwasNannyherself,dawneduponhim,likethemooncomingoutofacloud,untilatlength,insteadofonlybelievingMr.Raymondthatthiswasshe,hesawforhimselfthatitwasNannyindeed—verywornbutgrownbeautiful.
Hewentuptoher.Shesmiled.Hehadheardherlaugh,buthadneverseenhersmilebefore.
“Nanny,doyouknowme?”saidDiamond.
Sheonlysmiledagain,asifthequestionwasamusing.
