Chapter XXV. Diamond's Dream

           

           Whentheyhadexamineditwell,theywouldkneeldownoneaftertheotherandpeepthroughthehole;buttheyalwaysstoodbacktogiveDiamondthefirstlook.Allthatdiamondcouldreport,however,was,thatthroughthestar-holeshesawagreatmanythingsandplacesandpeopleheknewquitewell,onlysomehowtheyweredifferent—therewassomethingmarvellousaboutthem—hecouldnottellwhat.Everytimeherosefromlookingthroughastar-hole,hefeltasifhisheartwouldbreakfor,joy;andhesaidthatifhehadnotcried,hedidnotknowwhatwouldhavebecomeofhim.

           Assoonasallhadlooked,thestarwascarefullyfittedinagain,alittlemouldwasstrewnoverit,andtherestoftheheapleftasasignthatthestarhadbeendiscovered.

           Atlengthonedugupasmallstarofamostlovelycolour—acolourDiamondhadneverseenbefore.Themomenttheangelsawwhatitwas,insteadofshowingitabout,hehandedittooneofhisneighbours,andseatedhimselfontheedgeofthehole,saying:

           “Thiswilldoforme.Good-bye.I’moff.”

           Theycrowdedabouthim,huggingandkissinghim;thenstoodbackwithasolemnstillness,theirwingslyingclosetotheirshoulders.Thelittlefellowlookedroundonthemoncewithasmile,andthenshothimselfheadlongthroughthestar-hole.Diamond,asprivileged,threwhimselfonthegroundtopeepafterhim,buthesawnothing.“It’snouse,”saidthecaptain.“Ineversawanythingmoreofonethatwentthatway.”

           “Hiswingscan’tbemuchuse,”saidDiamond,concernedandfearful,yetcomfortedbythecalmlooksoftherest.
