Diamondhadresolvedtogostraighttothecab-standwherehewasbestknown,andnevertocrawlforfearofgettingannoyedbyidlers.BeforehegotacrossOxfordStreet,however,hewashailedbyamanwhowantedtocatchatrain,andwasintoogreatahurrytothinkaboutthedriver.HavingcarriedhimtoKing’sCrossingoodtime,andgotagoodfareinreturn,hesetoffagainingreatspirits,andreachedthestandinsafety.Hewasthefirstthereafterall.
Asthemenarrivedtheyallgreetedhimkindly,andinquiredafterhisfather.
“Ain’tyouafraidoftheold’ossrunningawaywithyou?”askedone.
“No,hewouldn’trunawaywithme,”answeredDiamond.“HeknowsI’mgettingtheshillingsforfather.Orifhedidhewouldonlyrunhome.”
“Well,you’reapluckyone,forallyourgirl’slooks!”saidtheman;“andIwishyeluck.
