           ButifyouhadbeenoutinthefaceandnotatthebackoftheNorthWind,onacoldratherfrostynight,andinyournight-gown,youwouldhavefeltitallquiteasstrangeasDiamonddid.Hecriedalittle,justalittle,hewassodisappointedtolosethelady:ofcourse,you,littleman,wouldn’thavedonethat!Butformypart,Idon’tmindpeoplecryingsomuchasImindwhattheycryabout,andhowtheycry—whethertheycryquietlylikeladiesandgentlemen,orgoshriekinglikevulgaremperors,orill-naturedcooks;forallemperorsarenotgentlemen,andallcooksarenotladies—norallqueensandprincessesforthatmatter,either.

           Butitcan’tbedeniedthatalittlegentlecryingdoesonegood.ItdidDiamondgood;forassoonasitwasoverhewasabraveboyagain.

           “Sheshan’tsayitwasmyfault,anyhow!”saidDiamond.“IdaresaysheishidingsomewheretoseewhatIwilldo.Iwilllookforher.”

           Sohewentroundtheendofthestabletowardsthekitchen-garden.Butthemomenthewasclearoftheshelterofthestable,sharpasaknifecamethewindagainsthislittlechestandhisbarelegs.Stillhewouldlookinthekitchen-garden,andwenton.Butwhenhegotroundtheweeping-ashthatstoodinthecorner,thewindblewmuchstronger,anditgrewstrongerandstrongertillhecouldhardlyfightagainstit.Anditwassocold!Alltheflashyspikesofthestarsseemedtohavegotsomehowintothewind.ThenhethoughtofwhattheladyhadsaidaboutpeoplebeingcoldbecausetheywerenotwiththeNorthWind.
