Chapter XVII. Diamond Goes On

           

           Iwon’tvouchforwhattheoldhorsewasthinking,foritisverydifficulttofindoutwhatanyoldhorseisthinking.

           “Ohdear!”saidDiamondwhenhehaddone,“I’msotired!”

           AndhelaidhimselfdownatfulllengthonoldDiamond’sback.

           BythistimeallthemeninthestableweregatheredaboutthetwoDiamonds,andallmuchamused.Oneofthemliftedhimdown,andfromthattimehewasagreaterfavouritethanbefore.Andifevertherewasaboywhohadachanceofbeingaprodigyatcab-driving,Diamondwasthatboy,forthestrifecametobewhoshouldhavehimoutwithhimonthebox.

           Hismother,however,wasalittleshyofthecompanyforhim,andbesidesshecouldnotalwayssparehim.Alsohisfatherlikedtohavehimhimselfwhenhecould;sothathewasmoredesiredthanenjoyedamongthecabmen.

           Butonewayandanotherhedidlearntodriveallsortsofhorses,andtodrivethemwell,andthatthroughthemostcrowdedstreetsinLondonCity.Ofcoursetherewasthemanalwaysonthebox-seatbesidehim,butbeforelongtherewasseldomtheleastoccasiontotakethereinsfromoutofhishands.Foronethinghenevergotfrightened,andconsequentlywasneverintoogreatahurry.Yetwhenthemomentcamefordoingsomethingsharp,hewasalwaysreadyforit.Imustoncemoreremindmyreadersthathehadbeentothebackofthenorthwind.

           Oneday,whichwasneitherwashing-day,norcleaning-daynormarketing-day,norSaturday,norMonday—uponwhichconsequentlyDiamondcouldbesparedfromthebaby—hisfathertookhimonhisowncab.
