           ForalongtimeRaskolnikovdidnotknowofhismother’sdeath,thougharegularcorrespondencehadbeenmaintainedfromthetimehereachedSiberia.ItwascarriedonbymeansofSonia,whowroteeverymonthtotheRazumihinsandreceivedananswerwithunfailingregularity.AtfirsttheyfoundSonia’slettersdryandunsatisfactory,butlaterontheycametotheconclusionthattheletterscouldnotbebetter,forfromtheseletterstheyreceivedacompletepictureoftheirunfortunatebrother’slife.Sonia’sletterswerefullofthemostmatter-of-factdetail,thesimplestandclearestdescriptionofallRaskolnikov’ssurroundingsasaconvict.Therewasnowordofherownhopes,noconjectureastothefuture,nodescriptionofherfeelings.Insteadofanyattempttointerprethisstateofmindandinnerlife,shegavethesimplefactsthatis,hisownwords,anexactaccountofhishealth,whatheaskedforattheirinterviews,whatcommissionhegaveherandsoon.Allthesefactsshegavewithextraordinaryminuteness.Thepictureoftheirunhappybrotherstoodoutatlastwithgreatclearnessandprecision.Therecouldbenomistake,becausenothingwasgivenbutfacts.
