OneofthethingsthatservedtodarkenClyde’smoodjustaboutthetimewhenhewasseekingsomepracticalsolutionforhimself,tosaynothingofitsprofoundlydishearteningeffectontheGriffithsfamilyasawhole,wasthefactthathissisterEsta,inwhomhetooknolittleinterest(althoughtheyreallyhadverylittleincommon),ranawayfromhomewithanactorwhohappenedtobeplayinginKansasCityandwhotookapassingfancyforher.
ThetruthinregardtoEstawasthatinspiteofherguardedup-bringing,andtheseemingreligiousandmoralfervorwhichattimesappearedtocharacterizeher,shewasjustasensuous,weakgirlwhodidnotbyanymeansknowyetwhatshethought.Despitetheatmosphereinwhichshemoved,essentiallyshewasnotofit.Likethelargemajorityofthosewhoprofessanddailyrepeatthedogmasandcreedsoftheworld,shehadcomeintoherpracticesandimaginedattitudesoinsensiblyfromherearliestchildhoodon,thatuptothistime,andevenlater,shedidnotknowthemeaningofitall.Forthenecessityofthoughthadbeenobviatedbyadviceandlaw,or"revealed"truth,andsolongasothertheoriesorsituationsandimpulsesofanexternaloreveninternal,characterdidnotarisetoclashwiththese,shewassafeenough.Oncetheydid,however,itwasaforegoneconclusionthatherreligiousnotions,notbeinggroundedonanyconvictionortemperamentalbiasofherown,werenotlikelytowithstandtheshock.
