InconnectionwiththeautomobileridesuggestedandarrangedforthefollowingSundaybyHegglundthroughhischauffeurfriend,achangeofplanwasannounced.Thecar—anexpensivePackard,noless—couldnotbehadforthatday,butmustbeusedbythisThursdayorFriday,ornotatall.For,ashadbeenpreviouslyexplainedtoall,butnotwiththestrictestadherencetothetruth,thecarbelongedtoacertainMr.Kimbark,anelderlyandverywealthymanwhoatthetimewastravelinginAsia.Also,whatwasnottruewasthatthisparticularyouthwasnotMr.Kimbark’schauffeuratall,butrathertherakish,ne’er-do-wellsonofSparser,thesuperintendentofoneofMr.Kimbark’sstockfarms.Thissonbeinganxioustoposeassomethingmorethanthesonofasuperintendentofafarm,andasanoccasionalwatchman,havingaccesstothecars,haddecidedtotaketheveryfinestofthemandrideinit.
ItwasHegglundwhoproposedthatheandhishotelfriendsbeincludedonsomeinterestingtrip.Butsincethegeneralinvitationhadbeengiven,wordhadcomethatwithinthenextfewweeksMr.Kimbarkwaslikelytoreturn.Andbecauseofthis,WillardSparserhaddecidedatoncethatitmightbebestnottousethecaranymore.Hemightbetakenunawares,perhaps,byMr.Kimbark’sunexpectedarrival.LayingthisdifficultybeforeHegglund,whowaseagerforthetrip,thelatterhadscoutedtheidea.Whynotuseitoncemoreanyhow?Hehadstirreduptheinterestofallofhisfriendsinthisandnowhatedtodisappointthem.
