           The"deathhouse"inthisparticularprisonwasoneofthosecrasserectionsandmaintenancesofhumaninsensitivenessandstupidityprincipallyforwhichnooneprimarilywasreallyresponsible.Indeed,itstotalplanandprocedureweretheresultsofaseriesofprimarylegislativeenactments,followedbydecisionsandcompulsionsasdevisedbythetemperamentsandseemingnecessitiesofvariouswardens,untilatlastbydegreesandwithoutanythingworthyofthenameofthinkingonanyone’sparttherehadbeengatheredandwasnowbeingenforcedallthatcouldpossiblybeimaginedinthewayofunnecessaryandreallyunauthorizedcrueltyorstupidanddestructivetorture.Andtotheendthataman,oncecondemnedbyajury,wouldbecompelledtosuffernotalonethedeathforwhichhissentencecalled,butathousandothersbeforethat.Fortheveryroombyitsarrangement,aswellastherulesgoverningthelivesandactionsoftheinmates,wassufficienttobringaboutthistorture,willy-nilly.
