Therewas,however,atthecenterofthismainpassage—anddividingtheselowercellsequallyastonumber—asecondandnarrowerpassage,whichatoneendgaveintowhatwasnowknownastheOldDeathHouse(whereatpresentonlyvisitorstotheinmatesofthenewDeathHousewerereceived),andattheotherintotheexecutionroominwhichstoodtheelectricchair.Twoofthecellsonthelowerpassage—thoseatthejunctionofthenarrowerpassage—facedtheexecution-roomdoor.Thetwooppositethese,onthecorrespondingcorners,facedthepassagethatgaveintotheOldDeathHouseorwhatnowbyalargestretchoftheimagination,couldbecalledthecondemnedmen’sreceptionroom,wheretwiceweeklyanimmediaterelativeoralawyermightbemet.Butnoothers.
IntheOldDeathHouse(orpresentreceptionroom),thecellsstillthere,andanintegralpartofthisreceptionplan,wereallinarowandononesideonlyofacorridor,thuspreventingpryinginspectionbyoneinmateofanother,andwithawirescreeninfrontaswellasgreenshadeswhichmightbedrawninfrontofeachcell.For,inanolderday,wheneveranewconvictarrivedordeparted,ortookhisdailywalk,orwentforhisbath,orwasledeventuallythroughthelittleirondoortothewestwhereformerlywastheexecutionchamber,theseshadesweredrawn.Hewasnotsupposedtobeseenbyhisassociates.
