           YetshehadneitherClyde’sforce,nor,ontheotherhand,hisresistance.Shewasinthemainadrifter,withavagueyearningtowardprettydresses,hats,shoes,ribbonsandthelike,andsuper-imposedabovethis,thereligioustheoryornotionthatsheshouldnotbe.Therewerethelongbrightstreetsofamorningandafternoonafterschoolorofanevening.Thecharmofcertaingirlsswingingalongtogether,armslocked,secretsa-whispering,orthatofboys,clownish,yetrevealingthroughtheirboundingridiculousanimalitytheforceandmeaningofthatchemistryandurgetowardmatingwhichliesbackofallyouthfulthoughtandaction.Andinherself,asfromtimetotimesheobservedloversorflirtation-seekerswholingeredatstreetcornersoraboutdoorways,andwholookedatherinalongingandseekingway,therewasastirring,anerveplasmpalpitationthatspokeloudlyforalltheseeminglymaterialthingsoflife,notforthethinpleasantriesofheaven.

           Andtheglancesdrilledherlikeaninvisibleray,forshewaspleasingtolookatandwasgrowingmoreattractivehourly.
