Andthereweretimes,when,theworkprovinghighlyunprofitableandAsabeingunabletomakemuchmoneyatthetwothingshemostunderstood—gardeningandcanvassingforoneinventionoranother—theywerequitewithoutsufficientfoodordecentclothes,andthechildrencouldnotgotoschool.Inthefaceofsuchsituationsasthese,whateverthechildrenmightthink,Asaandhiswiferemainedasoptimisticasever,ortheyinsistedtothemselvesthattheywere,andhadunwaveringfaithintheLordandHisintentiontoprovide.
Thecombinationhomeandmissionwhichthisfamilyoccupiedwasdrearyenoughinmostofitsphasestodiscouragetheaverageyouthorgirlofanyspirit.ItconsistedinitsentiretyofonelongstorefloorinanoldanddecidedlycolorlessandinartisticwoodenbuildingwhichwassituatedinthatpartofKansasCitywhichliesnorthofIndependenceBoulevardandwestofTroostAvenue,theexactstreetorplacebeingcalledBickel,averyshortthoroughfareopeningoffMissouriAvenue,asomewhatmorelengthybutnolessnondescripthighway.Andtheentireneighborhoodinwhichitstoodwasveryfaintlyandyetnotagreeablyredolentofacommerciallifewhichhadlongsincemovedfarthersouth,ifnotwest.Itwassomefiveblocksfromthespotonwhichtwiceaweektheopenairmeetingsofthesereligiousenthusiastsandproselytizerswereheld.
