           TheprincipalthingthattroubledClydeuptohisfifteenthyear,andforlongafterinretrospect,wasthatthecallingorprofessionofhisparentswastheshabbythingthatitappearedtobeintheeyesofothers.ForsooftenthroughouthisyouthindifferentcitiesinwhichhisparentshadconductedamissionorspokenonthestreetsGrandRapids,Detroit,Milwaukee,Chicago,lastlyKansasCityithadbeenobviousthatpeople,atleasttheboysandgirlsheencountered,lookeddownuponhimandhisbrothersandsistersforbeingthechildrenofsuchparents.Onseveraloccasions,andmuchagainstthemoodofhisparents,whonevercountenancedsuchexhibitionsoftemper,hehadstoppedtofightwithoneoranotheroftheseboys.Butalways,beatenorvictorious,hehadbeenconsciousofthefactthattheworkhisparentsdidwasnotsatisfactorytoothersshabby,trivial.Andalwayshewasthinkingofwhathewoulddo,oncehereachedtheplacewherehecouldgetaway.

           ForClyde’sparentshadprovedimpracticalinthematterofthefutureoftheirchildren.Theydidnotunderstandtheimportanceortheessentialnecessityforsomeformofpracticalorprofessionaltrainingforeachandeveryoneoftheiryoungones.Instead,beingwrappedupinthenotionofevangelizingtheworld,theyhadneglectedtokeeptheirchildreninschoolinanyoneplace.Theyhadmovedhereandthere,sometimesintheverymidstofanadvantageousschoolseason,becauseofalargerandbetterreligiousfieldinwhichtowork.
