Peterkin’sremarkwasfollowedbyarepetitionofthecry,louderthanbefore.
"Itcomesfromoneoftheseislands,"saidJack.
"Itmustbetheghostofajackass,then,"saidPeterkin,"forIneverheardanythingsolike."
Weallturnedoureyestowardstheclusterofislands,where,onthelargest,weobservedcuriousobjectsmovingontheshore.
"Soldierstheyare—that’sflat!"criedPeterkin,gazingatthemintheutmostamazement.
And,intruth,Peterkin’sremarkseemedtometobecorrect;foratthedistancefromwhichwesawthem,theyappearedtobeanarmyofsoldiers.Theretheystood,rankandfile,inlinesandinsquares,marchingandcounter-marching,withbluecoatsandwhitetrousers.Whilewewerelookingatthemthedreadfulcrycameagainoverthewater,andPeterkinsuggestedthatitmustbearegimentsentouttomassacrethenativesincoldblood.AtthisremarkJacklaughedandsaid:
"Why,Peterkin,theyarepenguins!"
"Penguins?"repeatedPeterkin.
"Ay,penguins,Peterkin,penguins—nothingmoreorlessthanbigsea-birds,asyoushallseeoneofthesedayswhenwepaythemavisitinourboat,whichImeantosetaboutbuildingthemomentwereturntoourbower."
