Wenowwendedourwaybacktothecoast,intendingtoencampnearthebeach,aswefoundthatthemosquitoesweretroublesomeintheforest.Onourwaywecouldnothelpadmiringthebirdswhichflewandchirpedaroundus.Amongthemweobservedaprettykindofparoquet,withagreenbody,abluehead,andaredbreast;alsoafewbeautifulturtle-doves,andseveralflocksofwood-pigeons.Thehuesofmanyofthesebirdswereextremelyvivid—brightgreen,blue,andscarletbeingtheprevailingtints.Wemadeseveralattemptsthroughoutthedaytobringdownoneofthese,bothwiththebowandthesling—notformeresport,buttoascertainwhethertheyweregoodforfood.Butweinvariablymissed,althoughonceortwicewewereverynearhitting.Aseveningdrewonhowever,aflockofpigeonsflewpast.Islungastoneintothemidstofthemataventure,andhadthegoodfortunetokillone.Wewerestartledsoonafterbyaloudwhistlingnoiseaboveourheads,andonlookingup,sawaflockofwildducksmakingforthecoast.Wewatchedthese,andobservingwheretheyalighted,followedthemupuntilwecameuponamostlovelybluelake,notmorethantwohundredyardslong,embosomedinverdanttrees.Itsplacidsurface,whichreflectedeveryleafandstemasifinamirror,wascoveredwithvariousspeciesofwildducks,feedingamongthesedgesandbroad-leavedwater-plantswhichfloatedonit,whilenumerousbirdslikewater-hensrantoandfromostbusilyonitsmargin.Theseall,withoneaccord,flewtumultuouslyawaytheinstantwemadeourappearance.
