InsuchcasesJackalwaystookthelead,Peterkinfollowed,andIbroughtuptherear.Butwhenwetravelledalongthesands,whichextendedalmostinanunbrokenlineofglisteningwhiteroundtheisland,wemarchedabreast,aswefoundthismethodmoresociableandeverywaymorepleasant.Jack,beingthetallest,walkednextthesea,andPeterkinmarchedbetweenus,asbythisarrangementeitherofuscouldtalktohimorhetous,whileifJackandIhappenedtowishtoconversetogetherwecouldconvenientlydosooverPeterkin’shead.Peterkinusedtosay,inreferencetothisarrangement,thathadhebeenastallaseitherofus,ourorderofmarchmighthavebeenthesame;for,asJackoftenusedtoscoldhimforlettingeverythingwesaidtohimpassinatoneearandoutattheother,hisheadcould,ofcourse,formnointerruptiontoourdiscourse.
