Inafewminuteswewereallthreepushingthroughtheunderwoodoftheforest,headedbyPeterkin.
Wesooncametothetreeinquestion,which,afterJackhadcloselyexaminedit,weconcludedmustbethecandle-nuttree.Itsleaveswereofabeautifulsilverywhite,andformedafinecontrasttothedark-greenfoliageofthesurroundingtrees.Weimmediatelyfilledourpocketswiththenuts,afterwhichJacksaid:
"Now,Peterkin,climbthatcocoa-nuttreeandcutmeoneofthelongbranches."
Thiswassoondone;butitcostsometrouble,forthestemwasveryhigh,andasPeterkinusuallypullednutsfromtheyoungertrees,hewasnotmuchaccustomedtoclimbingthehighones.Theleaforbranchwasaverylargeone,andweweresurprisedatitssizeandstrength.Viewedfromalittledistance,thecocoa-nuttreeseemstobeatall,straightstem,withoutasinglebranchexceptatthetop,wherethereisatuftoffeathery-lookingleavesthatseemtowavelikesoftplumesinthewind.Butwhenwesawoneoftheseleavesorbranchesatourfeet,wefoundittobeastrongstalk,aboutfifteenfeetlong,withanumberofnarrow,pointedleafletsrangedalternatelyoneachside.
