           Inthesesmallervalleystherewerenostreams,buttheywereclothedwiththesameluxuriantvegetation.

           Thediameteroftheislandseemedtobeabouttenmiles,andasitwasalmostcircularinform,itscircumferencemusthavebeenthirtymilesperhapsalittlemore,ifallowancebemadeforthenumerousbaysandindentationsoftheshore.Theentireislandwasbeltedbyabeachofpurewhitesand,onwhichlavedthegentleripplesofthelagoon.Wenowalsoobservedthatthecoralreefcompletelyencircledtheisland;butitvarieditsdistancefromithereandthereinsomeplacesbeingamilefromthebeach,inothersafewhundredyards,buttheaveragedistancewashalf-a-mile.Thereeflayverylow,andthesprayofthesurfbrokequiteoveritinmanyplaces.Thissurfneverceaseditsroar;for,howevercalmtheweathermightbe,thereisalwaysagentleswayingmotioninthegreatPacific,which,althoughscarcenoticeableoutatsea,reachestheshoreatlastinahugebillow.Thewaterwithinthelagoon,asbeforesaid,wasperfectlystill.Therewerethreenarrowopeningsinthereef:oneoppositeeachendofthevalleywhichIhavedescribedascrossingtheisland;theotheroppositeourownvalley,whichweafterwardsnamedtheValleyoftheWreck.Ateachoftheseopeningsthereefroseintotwosmallgreenislets,coveredwithbushes,andhavingoneortwococoa-nutpalmsoneach.Theseisletswereverysingular,andappearedasifplantedexpresslyforthepurposeofmarkingthechannelintothelagoon
