           Formyself,havingforgottenmyclub,andnothavingtakentheprecautiontocutanother,Ibuttonedmyjacket,doubledmyfists,andthrewmyselfintoaboxingattitude.Imustsay,however,thatIfeltsomewhatuneasy;andmycompanionsafterwardsconfessedthattheirthoughtsatthismomenthadbeeninstantlyfilledwithalltheyhadeverheardorreadofwildbeastsandsavages,torturingsatthestake,roastingsalive,andsuch-likehorriblethings.Suddenlythepatteringnoiseincreasedwithtenfoldviolence.Itwasfollowedbyafearfulcrashamongthebushes,whichwasrapidlyrepeated,asifsomegiganticanimalwereboundingtowardsus.Inanothermomentanenormousrockcamecrashingthroughtheshrubbery,followedbyacloudofdustandsmallstones,andflewclosepastthespotwherewestood,carryingbushesandyoungtreesalongwithit.

           "Pooh!isthatall?"exclaimedPeterkin,wipingtheperspirationoffhisforehead."Why,IthoughtitwasallthewildmenandbeastsintheSouthSeaIslands,gallopingoninonegrandchargetosweepusoffthefaceoftheearth,insteadofamerestonetumblingdownthemountain-side!"

           "Nevertheless,"remarkedJack,"ifthatsamestonehadhitanyofusitwouldhaverenderedthechargeyouspeakofquiteunnecessary,Peterkin."

           Thiswastrue,andIfeltverythankfulforourescape.Onexaminingthespotmorenarrowly,wefoundthatitlayclosetothefootofaveryruggedprecipice,fromwhichstonesofvarioussizeswerealwaystumblingatintervals.
