Itwasanunusualsightformetoseeouroncejoyouscompanionintears,andIfeltaburningdesiretocomforthim;but,alas!whatcouldIsay?Icouldholdoutnohope;andalthoughIessayedtwicetospeak,thewordsrefusedtopassmylips.WhileIhesitatedJacksatdownbesidehimandwhisperedafewwordsinhisear,whilePeterkinthrewhimselfonhisfriend’sbreastandrestedhisheadonhisshoulder.
Thuswesatforsometimeindeepsilence.Soonafterweheardfootstepsattheentranceofthecave,andimmediatelyourjailerentered.Weweresomuchaccustomedtohisregularvisits,however,thatwepaidlittleattentiontohim,expectingthathewouldsetdownourmeagrefareasusualanddepart.But,tooursurprise,insteadofdoingso,headvancedtowardsuswithaknifeinhishand,andgoinguptoJack,hecutthethongsthatboundhiswrists;thenhedidthesametoPeterkinandme!Forfullyfiveminuteswestoodinspeechlessamazement,withourfreedhandshangingidlybyoursides.Thefirstthoughtthatrushedintomymindwasthatthetimehadcometoputustodeath;andalthough,asIhavesaidbefore,weactuallywishedfordeathinthestrengthofourdespair,nowthatwethoughtitdrewreallynearIfeltallthenaturalloveoflifereviveinmyheart,mingledwithachillofhorroratthesuddennessofourcall.
ButIwasmistaken.Aftercuttingourbondsthesavagepointedtothecave’smouth,andwemarched,almostmechanically,intotheopenair.
