Wetooktheseconddivetogether,andkeptbesideeachotherwhileunderwater;andIwasgreatlysurprisedtofindthatwecouldkeepdownmuchlongerthanIeverrecollecthavingdoneinourownseasathome.Ibelievethatthiswasowingtotheheatofthewater,whichwassowarmthatweafterwardsfoundwecouldremaininitfortwoandthreehoursatatimewithoutfeelinganyunpleasanteffectssuchasweusedtoexperienceintheseaathome.WhenJackreachedthebottom,hegraspedthecoralstemsandcreptalongonhishandsandknees,peepingundertheseaweedandamongtherocks.Iobservedhim,also,pickuponeortwolargeoystersandretaintheminhisgrasp,asifhemeanttotakethemupwithhim;soIalsogatheredafew.Suddenlyhemadeagraspatafishwithblueandyellowstripesonitsback,andactuallytoucheditstail,butdidnotcatchit.Atthisheturnedtowardsmeandattemptedtosmile;butnosoonerhadhedonesothanhespranglikeanarrowtothesurface,where,onfollowinghim,Ifoundhimgaspingandcoughingandspittingwaterfromhismouth.Inafewminutesherecovered,andwebothturnedtoswimashore.
