Aquarterofanhoursufficedtobringustotheoverhangingcliffunderwhoseblackshadowourlittlecanoelay,withherbowinthewater,readytobelaunched,andmostofhercargoalreadystowedaway.Asthekeelofourlittleboatgratedonthesand,ahandwaslaiduponthebow,andadimformwasseen.

"Yis,itamme,"wasthereply.

"Isallready?"whisperedtheteacher.
"Notquite,"repliedPeterkin.—"Here,Ralph,layholdo’thispairofoars,andstowthemawayifyoucan.Idon’tlikepaddles.Afterwe’resafeaway,I’lltrytoriguprowlocksforthem."
"Now,then,inwithyouandshoveoff!"
Onemoreearnestsqueezeofthekindteacher’shand,andwithhiswhisperedblessingyetsoundinginourears,weshotlikeanarrowfromtheshore,spedoverthestillwatersofthelagoon,andpaddledasswiftlyasstrongarmsandwillingheartscouldurgeusoverthelongswelloftheopensea.
