Withanenergythatheonlygavewaytoinmomentsofexcitement,Jackboundedtohisfeet,threwoffhisclothes,shookbackhishair,andwithalion-likespring,dashedoverthesandsandplungedintotheseawithsuchforceasquitetoenvelopPeterkininashowerofspray.Jackwasaremarkablygoodswimmeranddiver,sothatafterhisplungewesawnosignofhimfornearlyaminute,afterwhichhesuddenlyemerged,withacryofjoy,agoodmanyyardsoutfromtheshore.MyspiritsweresomuchraisedbyseeingallthisthatI,too,hastilythrewoffmygarmentsandendeavouredtoimitateJack’svigorousbound;butIwassoawkwardthatmyfootcaughtonastump,andIfelltotheground.ThenIslippedonastonewhilerunningoverthesandandnearlyfellagain,muchtotheamusementofPeterkin,wholaughedheartilyandcalledmea"slowcoach;"whileJackcriedout,"Comealong,Ralph,andI’llhelpyou!"However,whenIgotintothewaterImanagedverywell;forIwasreallyagoodswimmeranddivertoo.Icouldnot,indeed,equalJack,whowassuperiortoanyEnglishmanIeversaw;butIinfinitelysurpassedPeterkin,whocouldonlyswimalittle,andcouldnotdiveatall.
WhilePeterkinenjoyedhimselfintheshallowwaterandinrunningalongthebeach,JackandIswamoutintothedeepwaterandoccasionallydivedforstones.Ishallneverforgetmysurpriseanddelightonfirstbeholdingthebottomofthesea.
