Manyofthedresses,bothofwomenandmen,weregrotesqueenough,beingverybadimitationsoftheEuropeangarb;butallworeadressofsomesortorother.Theyseemedverygladtoseeus,andcrowdedroundusastheteacherledthewaytohisdwelling,wherewewereentertained,inthemostsumptuousmanner,onbakedpigandallthevarietiesoffruitsandvegetablesthattheislandproduced.Weweremuchannoyed,however,bytherats:theyseemedtorunaboutthehouselikedomesticanimals.Aswesatattable,oneofthempeepedupatusovertheedgeofthecloth,closetoPeterkin’selbow,whoflooreditwithablowonthesnoutfromhisknife,exclaimingashedidso:
"Isay,MisterTeacher,whydon’tyousettrapsforthesebrutes?Surelyyouarenotfondofthem!"
"No,"repliedtheteacherwithasmile."Wewouldbegladtogetridofthemifwecould;butifweweretotrapalltheratsontheisland,itwouldoccupyourwholetime."
"Arethey,then,sonumerous?"inquiredJack.
"Theyswarmeverywhere.Thepoorheathensonthenorthsideeatthem,andthinkthemverysweet.Sodidmypeopleformerly;buttheydonoteatsomanynow,becausethemissionarywhowaslasthereexpresseddisgustatit.Thepoorpeopleaskedifitwaswrongtoeatrats;andhetoldthemthatitwascertainlynotwrong,butthatthepeopleofEnglandwouldbemuchdisgustedweretheyaskedtoeatrats."
