           Now,whileengagedinthecoastingtradeIfellinwithmanyseamenwhohadtravelledtoalmosteveryquarteroftheglobe;andIfreelyconfessthatmyheartglowedardentlywithinmeastheyrecountedtheirwildadventuresinforeignlandsthedreadfulstormstheyhadweathered,theappallingdangerstheyhadescaped,thewonderfulcreaturestheyhadseenbothonthelandandinthesea,andtheinterestinglandsandstrangepeopletheyhadvisited.Butofalltheplacesofwhichtheytoldme,nonecaptivatedandcharmedmyimaginationsomuchastheCoralIslandsoftheSouthernSeas.Theytoldmeofthousandsofbeautiful,fertileislandsthathadbeenformedbyasmallcreaturecalledthecoralinsect,wheresummerreignednearlyalltheyearround,wherethetreeswereladenwithaconstantharvestofluxuriantfruit,wheretheclimatewasalmostperpetuallydelightful;yetwhere,strangetosay,menwerewild,bloodthirstysavages,exceptinginthosefavouredislestowhichtheGospelofourSaviourhadbeenconveyed.Theseexcitingaccountshadsogreataneffectuponmymindthat,whenIreachedtheageoffifteen,IresolvedtomakeavoyagetotheSouthSeas.
