Thecaptainassented,andorderedmetostandinreadinesswiththeboat-hook,toshoveashoreatamoment’snoticeiftheyshouldreturn,ortoshoveoffifanyofthesavagesshouldhappentoapproach.Hethenthrewhiscarbineintothehollowofhisarm,andglidedthroughthebushes,followedbyhismen.WithathrobbingheartIawaitedtheresultofourplan.Iknewtheexactlocalitywherethemusketwasplaced,forBillhaddescribedittome,andIkeptmystrainingeyesfixeduponthespot.Butnosoundcame,andIbegantofearthateithertheyhadgoneinanotherdirectionorthatBillhadnotfixedthestringproperly.SuddenlyIheardafaintclick,andobservedoneortwobrightsparksamongthebushes.Myheartimmediatelysankwithinme,forIknewatoncethatthetriggerhadindeedbeenpulled,butthatthepriminghadnotcaught.Theplan,therefore,hadutterlyfailed.AfeelingofdreadnowbegantocreepovermeasIstoodintheboat,inthatdark,silentspot,awaitingtheissueofthismurderousexpedition.IshudderedasIglancedatthewaterthatglidedpastlikeadarkreptile.Ilookedbackattheschooner;butherhullwasjustbarelyvisible,whilehertaperingmastswerelostamongthetreeswhichovershadowedher.Herlowersailswereset,butsothickwasthegloomthattheywerequiteinvisible.
SuddenlyIheardashot.Inamomentathousandvoicesraisedayellinthevillage;againthecryroseonthenightair,andwasfollowedbybrokenshoutsasofscatteredpartiesofmenboundingintothewoods.
