           "Moremurder!"saidBillinavoicethatsoundedbetweenahoarselaughandagroan.

           "Surelytheyarenotgoingtomurderthem?"saidI,lookinganxiouslyintoBill’sface.

           "Idon’tknow,Ralph,"repliedBill,"whatthey’regoin’todowiththem;butIfeartheymeannogoodwhentheytiefellowsupinthatway."

           Aswecontinuedourwaytowardsthewoodcutters,IobservedthatBilllookedanxiouslyoverhisshoulderinthedirectionwheretheprocessionhaddisappeared.Atlasthestopped,andturningabruptlyonhisheel,said:

           "Itellyewhatitis,Ralph:Imustbeatthebottomo’thataffair.Letusfollowtheseblackscoundrelsandseewhatthey’regoin’todo."

           ImustsayIhadnowishtopryfurtherintotheirbloodypractices;butBillseemedbentonit,soIturnedandwent.Wepassedrapidlythroughthebush,beingguidedintherightdirectionbytheshoutsofthesavages.Suddenlytherewasadeadsilence,whichcontinuedforsometime,whileBillandIinvoluntarilyquickenedourpaceuntilwewererunningatthetopofourspeedacrossthenarrowneckoflandpreviouslymentioned.Aswereachedthevergeofthewoodwediscoveredthesavagessurroundingthelargewar-canoe,whichtheywereapparentlyonthepointoflaunching.Suddenlythemultitudeputtheirunitedstrengthtothecanoe;butscarcelyhadthehugemachinebeguntomovewhenayell,themostappallingthateverfelluponmyear,rosehighabovetheshoutingofthesavages.
