Thisferociousdeedtookplacewithinsightofourpartyaswewendedourwaytothebeach,butIcouldnotobserveanyotherexpressiononthefacesofthementhanthatoftotalindifferenceorcontempt.Itseemedtomeaveryawfulthingthatitshouldbepossibleformentocometosuchhardnessofheartandcallousnesstothesightofbloodshedandviolence;but,indeed,Ibegantofindthatsuchconstantexposuretoscenesofbloodwashavingaslighteffectuponmyself,andIshudderedwhenIcametothinkthatItoowasbecomingcallous.
IthoughtuponthissubjectmuchthatnightwhileIwalkedupanddownthedeckduringmyhoursofwatch,andIcametotheconclusionthatifI,whohated,abhorred,anddetestedsuchbloodydeedsasIhadwitnessedwithinthelastfewweeks,couldsosooncometobelesssensitiveaboutthem,howlittlewonderthatthesepoor,ignorantsavages,whowerebornandbredinfamiliaritytherewith,shouldthinknothingofthematall,andshouldholdhumanlifeinsoveryslightesteem!
