Butthekitesweredifferentfromoursinmanyrespects,beingofeveryvarietyofshape.Theyweremadeofverythincloth,andtheboysraisedthemtoawonderfulheightintheairbymeansoftwinemadefromthecocoa-nuthusk.Othergamestherewere,someofwhichshowedthenaturaldepravityoftheheartsofthesepoorsavages,andmademewishferventlythatmissionariesmightbesentouttothem.Buttheamusementwhichthegreatestnumberofthechildrenofbothsexesseemedtotakechiefdelightinwasswimminganddivinginthesea,andtheexpertnesswhichtheyexhibitedwastrulyamazing.Theyseemedtohavetwoprincipalgamesinthewater,oneofwhichwastodiveoffasortofstagewhichhadbeenerectednearadeeppartofthesea,andchaseeachotherinthewater.Someofthemwentdowntoanextraordinarydepth;othersskimmedalongthesurface,orrolledoverandoverlikeporpoises,ordivingundereachother,cameupunexpectedlyandpulledeachotherdownbyalegoranarm.Theyneverseemedtotireofthissport,andfromthegreatheatofthewaterintheSouthSeas,theycouldremaininitnearlyalldaywithoutfeelingchilled.Manyofthesechildrenwerealmostinfants,scarceabletowalk;yettheystaggereddownthebeach,flungtheirround,fatlittleblackbodiesfearlesslyintodeepwater,andstruckouttoseawithasmuchconfidenceasducklings.
