Aswewoundalonginsinglefilethroughtherich,fragrantgrovesofbanana,cocoa-nut,bread-fruit,andothertrees,Iobservedthatthereweremanyoftheplumandbanyantrees,withwhichIhadbecomefamiliarontheCoralIsland.Inoticed,also,largequantitiesoftaro—roots,yams,andsweetpotatoesgrowinginenclosures.Onturningintoanopengladeofthewoods,wecameabruptlyuponaclusterofnativehouses.Theywerebuiltchieflyofbamboos,andwerethatchedwiththelarge,thickleavesofthepandanus;butmanyofthemhadlittlemorethanaslopingroofandthreesideswithanopenfront,beingthemostsimpleshelterfromtheweatherthatcouldwellbeimagined.
