Intenminutesthecanoereturned,bringingtheotherchief,whocertainlypresentedamostextraordinaryappearance,havingpaintedonehalfofhisfaceredandtheotherhalfyellow,besidesornamentingitwithvariousdesignsinblack!OtherwisehewasmuchthesameinappearanceasRomata,thoughnotsopowerfullybuilt.Asthischiefhadneverseenashipbefore—except,perchance,someofthepettytradersthatatlongintervalsvisittheseremoteislands—hewasmuchtakenupwiththeneatnessandbeautyofallthefittingsoftheschooner.Hewasparticularlystruckwithamusketwhichwasshowntohim,andaskedwherethewhitemengothatchetshardenoughtocutthetreeofwhichthebarrelwasmade!Whilehewasthusengaged,hisbrother-chiefstoodaloof,talkingwiththecaptain,andfondlingasuperbcockandalittleblue-headedparoquet—thefavouritesofwhichIhavebeforespoken.IobservedthatalltheothernativeswalkedinacrouchingposturewhileinthepresenceofRomata.
